I threw myself into journaling more often and reading and commenting at my favorite blogs.

It has been about six weeks and I've noticed a quiet deepening of my passion for writing, along with a growing confidence and comfort as I edge out of my safe zone with respect to writing posts for my blogs and commenting on those that have become my favorite daily reads: Whole Latte Life, Awake is Good and Enriched by Words to name a few. All in all, my writing has improved as well as my connection and relationship with the authors of these blogs.

I believe this is due to not working on a weekly deadline. Maybe I needed a break. Although I took an in-home one-week retreat recently, I still had to write articles for the column. The retreat was invigorating to a certain degree but I guess I needed total freedom. Because there were readers banking on the column every week, I felt obligated to not put it on hold. I don't regret that.

Anyway, that was then and this is now. I have time for other interests. My journalism studies are my priority, right up there with doting on my 3-week-old grand-daughter.

I needed this time. It has brought a measure of simplicity to my days and simplicity is something I always welcome.

Moving on with passion is my newest inspiration for writing and living.

 Comments

Starting Over

It seems as if at the beginning of every year, something happens - a change is foisted upon me. Usually the change hits me unexpectedly. This year though, I half expected it.

Wright Words of Wisdom, my weekly column in the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper's Womanwise magazine was cancelled to help deal with the economic slowdown. That's their story and they are sticking to it.

My heart skipped a beat as I read the email from the editor, but I recognized the opportunity to rise from the comfortable place I'd been sitting and stretch my writing muscles. In fact just about three days earlier, I enrolled with the Writer's Bureau for their Journalism course. Even as I wondered if journalism is my cup of tea, I embrace the chance to try something new - a shift in how I approach my writing, the topics I select and the journey out of my comfort zone.

Starting over in this case, is a welcomed opportunity and I embrace it with open arms.
